impress 는 본래 타동사로 "누군가를  감동 시키다(감명을 주다), -에게 깊은 인상을 주다"는 뜻이다. 다음으로 "-ed" 수동적의미를 만드는 접미사로 "-된, -되어진" 등의 의미로 생각할 수 있다. 반면에 접미사 -ive 는 "-의 성질을 갖는" 의미로 생각 할 수 있다. 

 

She ​tried to impress her ​teachers by using ​big words in all her ​essays.

그녀는 그녀의 에세이에서 어려운 단어를 씀으로서 그녀의 선생님에게 좋은 인상을 주려고 노력했다.
