competent 와 competitive 는 compete 이라는 공통의 동사를 갖는 형용사로, 심지어 우리말로 해석하고 난 후에도 혼동될 수 있는 표현들이다. 우선 competent 는 능력있는, 적임의 이라는 뜻이다. 무언가를 만족스럽게 또는 효과적으로 한다는 뜻이다. 즉 단순히 말해 잘한다는 뜻이다. 하지만 아주 뛰어나다는 뜻은 아니다.

이에 비해, competitive 는 경쟁력이 있는, 경쟁적인, 경쟁심이 강한 등의 뜻을 갖는다. 비교 대상이 있다고 생각하면, 좀 더 이해하는데 도움이 된다. 비교 대상이 있고 그 비교대상과 비교해 경쟁력이 있다는 뜻이다. 경쟁적인 이라는 것은 상대들과의 "경쟁이 많은(심한)" 정도의 의미로 생각할 수 있다.
