명사의 복수형, 복수명사 만들기

 

영어에서는 셀수 있는 명사의 경우 둘 이상이면, 그 명사 자체적으로 복수명사임을 나타내야 한다. 가장 일반적인 방식은 "S"를 붙여주는 것이다. 한국어로 치면 "들" 정도의 의미를 갖는다고 볼 수 있다. 복수형 명사를 만드는 방법은 단어의 끝에 "s"를 붙여주거나, 또는 완전히 다른 형태로 바꿔주는 것이다.

 

 

 

복수명사 만들기 단순히 "S" 붙이기

book  books 
house  houses  
chair  chairs  
tiger  tigers  
computer  computers 

 

There is a chair in the classroom.

There are 20 chairs in the classroom.

 

단수명사가 S, SS, SH, CH, X 로 끝나는 경우 "ES" 

 

이 경우 "es" 를 붙여 복수형 명사를 만드는 것은 당연해 보인다. 그냥 "s"만 붙인다면

그 단어의 마지막소리와 "S"의 소리가 비슷해 발음하기 어려울 것이다.

모음 + y 로 끝날 때 복수명사 만들기, 단순히 "S"를 붙여준다.

자음 + y 로 끝날 때 복수명사 만들기, "Y"를 "I"로 고치고  "ES"를 붙여준다.

만약  F 나 FE 로 끝난다며, F 나  FE  를 빼고 "VES"를 붙여 복수형 명사를 만든다.
