차이점, 예문

 

위 의 두가지 표현은 시험문제에 자주 나오는 빈도가 다소 있는 표현이다. 그 문제 유형은 주어의 인칭과 수에 따른 동사형태 결정 문제다. 대부분의 영어학습서와 학습자들이 알고 있기로는 a number of 는 "많은" 이라는 의미고, the number of 는 -의 수라는 뜻이다. 그러므로 a number of 는 복수취급하고, the number of 는 그 수자체를 나타내며 단수 취급한다. 그러나 대부분의 사전상의 a number of 의 의미는 some,  several 또는 "more than a few but not many" 이다. 즉 다시 말해 불특정한 수를 나타내는 "얼마간의", 또는  "적지않은 그러나 많지 않은" 의 의미다. 그러나 또 다른사전에서는 "많은" 이라는 의미를 나타내기도 한다. 우리가 보통 a number of 를 "많은" 이라고 일괄적으로 말하는 것은 문법 설명을 쉽게 하기 위한 것이거나, 그렇게 인식하고 쓰거나 이다.

 

이렇더라도, 문법적으로 문제를 풀 때의 초점은 "a number of 복수" 는 복수 취급 하며, "the number of 복수" 는 단수 취급 한다는 것이다.

이 표현의 의미는 무언가의 그 수, 즉 다시 말해 그 숫자 자체를 의미한다. 그러므로 단수 취급 된다.
